Namak-e Safar – The taste of a Journey
In memory of the immigrants who left their homes for the better and never arrived!
The fashion collection “Namak-e Safar” (The taste of the Journey) is about distances and follows the project „Type and Politics – Depoliticizing Arabic Letters“ (link).
“Namak-e Safar” is for the ones who feel blessed, seeing their home-city’s name passing by a street. For the ones who are delighted to see familiar names in well-designed type, in a new look, and in a context not related to war, bombs or Islamism. For a taste of a different Middle East as we’re here in Berlin. For a small joy, not for the big desire.
And for the ones who are not familiar to this look and alphabet, too. For feeling and learning as a way of understanding. For joining different worlds based on a mutual interest in typography.
The designs on display make use of square Kufic letters – a classic style in Persian typography – and are limited editions in silkscreen, printed by G.Kat Berlin.
They show the names of Middle Eastern cities, where the Arabic alphabet is originated, and their distances in kilometres to Berlin.
